The Wıne Route of Thessalonıkı

After having underlined my wine experience, I should add some details about Thessaloniki and Epanomi as wine locations.

“Epanomi is an important wine center, right along the coast of the Thermaikos Gulf, with its quintessential temperate Mediterranean climate. Its proximity to the sea brings cooling sea breezes, which prevent the sudden maturation of the grapes. Epanomi’s microclimate, as a result, makes for an ideal vineyard. The Regional Wines are produced from a wide variety of grapes, including Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier among the whites; and Syrah, Merlot, Grenache Rouge, Limnio,

Mavroudi, Mavrotragano among the reds. In the highlands of this wine route, most vines are cultivated on the slopes of Mt Vertiskos. Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are cultivated side by side with the white varieties of Athiri, Assyrtiko, Malvazia, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Regional rosé wine is produced from Xinomavro. Finally, the Regional Wines of Thessaloniki are produced from all the varieties cultivated in the region.”
